Some Frequently Asked Questions…

Frequently Asked Questions about Surrogacy with Roots Surrogacy

At Roots Surrogacy, we understand that beginning the surrogacy journey comes with a host of questions and considerations. This process is deeply personal, and for many, there are numerous unknowns. Our commitment is to spend as much time as necessary to ensure that intended parents are fully educated and informed, providing transparency and support every step of the way. Here, we’ve gathered answers to some of the most frequently asked questions to help you navigate the surrogacy journey with confidence.

1) What is Roots Surrogacy’s Refund Policy if the Journey Does Not Go as Planned?

At Roots, we do not offer refunds. However, if a surrogate cannot complete the process due to reasons such as medical ineligibility, cancellation, or not signing the legal agreement, we will prioritize your rematch at no additional cost. We understand that these situations can be disappointing, and our goal is to minimize disruptions by placing you at the top of our waitlist and finding a new match as quickly as possible.

2) Will We Be Refunded if We Aren’t Matched Within Six Months?

Our current wait time is an estimate based on our waitlist and ongoing efforts to find qualified surrogates. Although we strive to match within six months, there’s a significant shortage of surrogates in the United States, which sometimes impacts wait times. While we don’t offer refunds, we invest extensively in recruiting and vetting surrogates to ensure they meet our high standards, so you’re always matched with someone genuinely ready and qualified for the journey.

3) How is Health Insurance Handled for the Surrogate?

Health insurance arrangements for the surrogate depend on her current insurance policy. We evaluate all possible insurance options and assist intended parents in choosing the most suitable plan. Roots manages all administrative tasks, including billing, to make this process as smooth as possible. Should complications arise during pregnancy or delivery, the insurance policy covers maternal care, ensuring protection against additional financial strain. Additionally, U.S. policies include an out-of-pocket maximum, capping potential expenses for complications.

4) How is Communication Facilitated Between Intended Parents and Surrogates?

We believe in fostering a relationship between intended parents and surrogates outside of the agency structure, while still ensuring everyone feels supported. Once matched, we create a shared email thread for you and the surrogate to communicate and get to know each other, with the agency included. After signing legal agreements, we provide direct contact information so you can establish the communication style and frequency that best fits your needs and the surrogate’s preferences.

5) Do You Provide Mediation for Issues? What Does This Look Like?

Absolutely! While conflicts are rare, Roots is here to offer mediation and resolve any issues that may arise. Our approach is centered on understanding, empathy, and clear communication to find a solution that respects both parties. Our team is trained in conflict resolution and will work with you and the surrogate to navigate any challenges, ensuring the journey remains positive and collaborative.

6) Is All Financial Support for the Surrogate Managed Through Roots?

Yes, all financial aspects of the surrogate’s support are handled through an escrow account managed by a third-party escrow company. This system provides transparency and ease for both intended parents and surrogates. The surrogate will not directly approach you for additional funds; instead, all payments, such as those for clothing, childcare, and other agreed-upon expenses in the Gestational Carrier Agreement, are paid from the escrow account according to the agreed schedule.

7) How is the Decision Made for a Premature Delivery if There is a Risk to the Baby?

In cases where a medically necessary early delivery is required, the surrogate will adhere to the medical recommendations provided by her doctor. If induction or other interventions are deemed essential for the baby’s health, these will be undertaken following professional medical advice, in line with the commitment to the child’s safety.

8) Who Decides if a C-Section is Needed?

The surrogate is contractually bound by the Gestational Carrier Agreement to follow her doctor’s recommendations, including decisions regarding a cesarean section if it is medically necessary. If there are any concerns or differing medical opinions, we can consult additional medical professionals to ensure that all decisions align with what’s safest for both the surrogate and the baby.

9) Can the Baby Be Born in Our City? What are the Additional Costs?

While it’s possible for a baby to be born in the intended parents' city, the cost is significantly higher due to the added logistics involved. This option requires the Executive Bliss package from Roots, and costs associated with relocating the surrogate and her family, securing local medical care, and covering housing could add an estimated $100,000 to $150,000. For those interested in exploring this option, our team can discuss the potential benefits and logistical considerations in detail.
